Living With Seborrheic Dermatitis

Prevalence and typical locations for seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is estimated to affect 3% to 5% of the general population in the United States. Patients from infancy to old age can be affected. Most people with seborrheic dermatitis experience periodic flare-ups and remission.9,12

Seborrheic dermatitis commonly occurs on the scalp, but also affects the eyebrows, eyelids, sides of the nose, ears, and chest.10 On the face, seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by powdery or greasy scale in skin folds and along the hairline.12 Some people also have swelling and redness inside the ear canal, in the cup of the ear, and behind the ears. On the front of the chest and between the shoulder blades, seborrheic dermatitis looks like round red patches that are sometimes scaly.10,13
